For over two decades, the courageous human rights defender and lawyer Alice Nkom has been tirelessly fighting for the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals in Cameroon. Her remarkable commitment earned her the Human Rights Award from Amnesty International Germany, a recognition that highlights her vital work far beyond the borders of Africa.
On 21 June 2024, Alice Nkom shared her experiences during a visit to Vienna. As part of a MEET & GREET organised by Amnesty International Austria, she spoke about her mission, the human rights situation in Cameroon, and her experiences in international advocacy.
Before taking questions from the audience, Beverly Mtui and Prince Njoku from freshVibes had the privilege of conducting an exclusive interview with Alice Nkom. In this conversation, she reflected on the challenges she faces as a lawyer in a country where LGBTQ+ rights are severely oppressed. At the same time, she shared moving and inspiring moments from her advocacy, moments of resistance, solidarity, and progress.
